Role Overview

Cortland is seeking a detail-oriented and resourceful Operations Paralegal to join Cortland’s in-house legal department, specifically to support Operations Counsel. As a Paralegal, you will assist the legal department with conducting legal research, organizing documents, tracking open claims and litigation, and communicating with outside counsel and Cortland operations staff. The ideal candidate is efficient, organized, and experienced in handling a variety of legal tasks with professionalism and discretion.

  • Conduct legal research and gather relevant information for internal memos
  • Review and edit legal documents, such as contracts, notices, releases, pleadings, motions, discovery, and affidavits
  • Maintain internal case/claim files
  • Organize and track the status of open claims, pre-litigation demands, pending litigation, liens, and other legal matters
  • Communicate with Cortland’s Operations Staff, various internal departments, and Outside Counsel
  • Review and summarize case materials and transcripts
  • Ensure legal compliance and assist with document filings
  • Assist with tracking and managing legal invoices
  • Provide general administrative support, including managing calendars, scheduling appointments, and tracking litigation deadlines

Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree is required
  • Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program
  • 2–4 years of experience in a legal setting or law firm (preferred)
  • Licensed Notary (preferred)
  • Experience in litigation management, corporate law settings, or contracts law is a plus
  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of legal terminology and procedures
  • Proficiency in legal research platforms (e.g. Westlaw, LexisNexis)
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with enterprise business applications (e.g. Sharepoint, Mimecast, Microsoft 365, Outlook, Box.com, DropBox, Coupa)
  • Demonstrated high-level of integrity and discretion when handling confidential information
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
