Role Overview

As Vice President of Tax Compliance and Reporting, you will play a critical role in defining and optimizing our tax reporting and compliance strategy. Reporting directly to the Chief Accounting Officer, you will oversee all aspects of U.S. and international tax compliance, working closely with external providers and internal teams to elevate the Tax Reporting Function at Cortland. Your strategic vision, operational efficiency, and proactive problem-solving approach will drive continuous improvement, standardization, and scalability within the department.

 

  • Lead the reporting function to deliver all US income tax reporting, including federal, state, and select international tax returns, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant filings.
  • Coordinate and review work performed by external CPA firms
  • Ensure the organization is in full compliance with all tax laws and regulations as well as with all requirements to maintain REIT status for applicable Funds
  • Provide leadership and guidance, offering strategic insights and operational direction that optimize workflows and position the team for growth and efficiency.
  • Spearhead and contribute to cross-functional projects, creating synergies with Cortland’s Legal, Accounting, Finance, Operations, and Investor Relations teams to enhance tax processes and support business goals.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal partners, peers, external consultants, and revenue department auditors.
  • Champion operational excellence through process improvement, leveraging best practices, supporting the evolution of tax software tools, incorporating data analytics, and promoting automation and technology to enhance efficiency and scalability.
  • Support strategic tax initiatives in collaboration with EVP of Tax.
  • Stay current on tax law changes and regulatory updates, assessing their impact and communicating necessary adjustments to key stakeholders.
  • Lead the audit provision process, from initial planning and forecasting to calculations, analysis, and reporting.
  • Develop and nurture relationships with external consultants, revenue department auditors, and internal teams, ensuring alignment and integration with Cortland’s global tax strategies.
  • Drive key Tax contributions to the design and implementation of the future ERP system
  • Lead company-wide effort to standardize sales/use tax reporting for growing lines of business

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Accounting, Taxation or JD/LLM; CPA certification preferred
  • 10+ years in private equity real estate investment, REITs, or public accounting (including at least 5 years relevant industry experience)
  • Deep expertise in tax reporting for partnerships, investment funds, REITs, and multi-family real estate assets.
  • Technical understanding of ASC 740 and ASC 842, with familiarity in international tax and cross-border differences
  • Proven ability to manage U.S. tax reporting for diverse investor groups, including institutional and international stakeholders
  • Track record of standardizing and documenting tax compliance and reporting processes
  • Advanced Excel with data analytics experience and knowledge of RealPage/OneSite; Accounting software is a plus
  • Collaborative, humble, and results-oriented, with a high commitment to quality and integrity
