Job Overview

As the Vice President of Construction, will oversee all aspects of construction management for both our in-house development team and our New Construction projects. This leadership role is accountable for the successful delivery of multifamily developments in major U.S. markets—ensuring operational excellence, financial performance, and brand-quality standards across every build.

 

Roles You Will Play

The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in construction management, particularly in garden-style, wrap/podium, and core residential product types. You will lead a high-performing team, manage department-level P&L, and serve as a strategic partner across Development, Capital, and Executive Leadership to help drive Cortland’s long-term growth.

  • Lead the selection and management of external contractors, vendors, and subcontractors, ensuring compliance with Cortland’s quality, safety, and performance standards.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement in construction processes, safety standards, and best practices across all projects.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and excellence within the construction teams.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including developers, architects, engineers, local government officials, and contractors.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Monitor and mitigate risks associated with construction projects, taking proactive measures to resolve issues as they arise.
  • Report regularly to senior leadership on the status of construction projects, performance metrics, and P&L results.

Building Blocks of Success

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in construction management, with a proven track record in leading teams and delivering successful residential construction projects.
  • Proven expertise in garden-style, wrap/podium product, and core residential buildings.
  • Strong background in managing both the technical and financial aspects of construction projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction processes, scheduling, budgeting, and contract management.
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations, quality control, and risk management in construction.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while balancing multiple projects and priorities.
  • LEED certification and PMP are a plus.
